Introduction

SQL is the preferred facility for maintaining and manipulating the DB2 for i Relational Database. Although DDS has been a reliable tool for data definition and data access, it has not evolved in recent years to serve new business requirements. The SQL language should be considered because :

  • It is a widely used standard; skills are more readily available.
  • It provides more and better options with which to access the database.
  • IBM investment for database access and performance is focused on SQL.
  • Some database capabilities, ( e.g. LOB support ) are only available with SQL

    This practical Workshop will provide an introduction to the SQL language and the various IBM i tools provided..

 

Who should attend

Developers and anyone wishing to become familiar with the main and basic SQL concepts.

Pre-requisites

No prior knowledge of SQL is required. Delegates should be familiar with the IBM i platform and have practical experience with the commands and tools relevant to application development and maintenance.

Attendees will require authority to create their own Schemas (Libraries), Tables (Physical Files), etc.
Source scripts will be provided to create a simple database for subsequent data manipulation.

Attendee's PC's should be fully configured as detailed in a separate "Checklist" which can be obtained on request. or once a booking has been made.

Course Objective and Content

Upon completion of this training course, the attendee will be able to :

  • Gain a working knowledge of the SQL language.
  • Develop practical skills in the use of DDL and DML statements.
  • Make extensive use of the SELECT statement..
  • Gain hands-on experience with IBM i tooling for SQL.
  • Undertsand the IBM i implementation and adaptations for SQL.
