This course is intended for new or relatively inexperienced
operators, help desk, support staff etc. It covers the fundemental skills needed
to operate and support the system on a day to day basis. You will be working from a command line using CL commands and menus. The graphical interface Navigator will also be covered. The course is very much hands on with plenty of practical
exercises to practise the knowledge gained.
On completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Detail the different System i models.
- Overview Logical Partitioning (LPAR) and how it works.
- Overview the operating system IBM i and release levels.
- Manage the system via menus.
- Using Command Group Menus.
- Detail the different functions keys.
- How, when and where to use the F1 = Help key effectively.
- Detail key sources for reference material.
- Use CL commands in different ways.
- Detail the structure of a CL command.
- How to search for a CL command.
- Detail objects, libraries and library lists.
- Key object, library and library list commands.
- How library lists work.
- Send, receive and display messages.
- Manage message queues,
- Dealing with system messages.
- Introduction to security.
- Create and change user profiles
- Understanding the key parameters in a user profile.
- How to secure objects.
- Understand how interactive and batch jobs process.
- Manage, monitor and control interactive and batch jobs.
- Troubleshoot jobs.
- Manage job queues and output queues.
- Submit batch jobs and use the job scheduler.
- Start, end and work with subsystems.
- Understand the key printing components.
- Manage print writers, remote writers and print devices.
- Track down and manage spooled files.
- Troubleshoot printing problems.
- Monitor and use the sysetm operator message queue and history log.
- Understand and interrogate job log spooled files.
- Use the system request menue.
- How to configure PC's.
- How to configure and manage devices, controllers and comm's.
- Detail the different types of IPL (i.e. normal and manual IPL's)
- Carry out a normal IPL.
- How to put the system in a rtestricted state and when you need to do this.
- Detail the different types of front control panel.
- Diagnose system failures.
- Manage tapes and tape devices.
- Detail the different options available to perform backups.
- Use save and restore commands and detail how save files work.
- How to perform a full system backup.
- How to monitor system resources usage (i.e. CPU utilisation, disk storage, capacity).
- Introduction to the Intergrated File System (IFS) and how it is used.
- Introduction to Navigator.
- Use Navigator to manage printing, jobs, job queues, messages etc.
Operators, help desk, supporty staff who are new to the iSeries (AS/400 who will be involved in the day to day running of an
iSeries (AS/400).
Although there are no specific pre-requisites for this course,
delegates should be computer literate.
A course manual with supporting documentation is provided.
The course includes considerable practical work to use CL commands, to control
jobs and output, to analyse problems, to carry out save and restore operations,
illustrate the equivalent functions using Operations Navigator etc.
We reccomend that after a suitable period of time of attending
ths course (e.g. 3 to 6 motnhs hands on experience) then delegates may want
to enhance the knowledge they have gained on this course by attending the Advanced Operations course. You may then also wish to consider the Systems Administration course depending on your job role.
